Ferragosto in Silvi: the traditional sea procession
Ferragosto (15th August) in Silvi is one of the most important holidays of the summer and coincides with the patronal feast of the parish of Santa Maria Assunta in Silvi Marina. The festival has several traditions that are repeated every year.
One of these is the sea procession of the statue of the Madonna, which has been held every year on August 15 since 1975. The statue of the Virgin Mary present in the church of the Assumption is taken and placed on a Coast Guard patrol boat which will transport it to the fishing boat who will lead the procession into the sea along the coast to the mouth of the Piomba river. The procession is very suggestive and is loved by both citizens and tourists who go to the beach early every year to attend the event.
After the procession, the Holy Mass is held outdoors in Piazza dei Pini, curated by the Parish of S. Maria Assunta of Silvi Marina.
On the evening of August 15, the Municipality offers tourists and locals the traditional fireworks display at midnight, which takes place both on the beach and in the sea. On this evening Silvi Paese also organizes music and dancing, and from its belvedere at the stroke of midnight you can admire all the fireworks displays offered by the coastal towns and beyond.
